I’m sure most people – maybe not Donald Trump – would agree with me when I say that talking about yourself is hard. You feel like you have to walk this delicate line between bragging and humility. But why do we do that to ourselves? We should be proud to tell the world who we are and what inspires us, because we are all unique and we all have so many interesting stories to tell.
So, for the sake of setting an example, I want to share a little bit about myself with you. First, I guess it would be important for me to introduce myself. My name is Rachel, also known as "Rach" by my friends, and more intimately as "Rachybaby" by my family. My dog calls me Mom. I am currently pursuing an English major and communications minor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where my professors would describe me as a dedicated student. My friends would playfully tell you that I’m a huge nerd (I am a sucker for classical lit). In reflection, I would have to agree. I don’t know anyone else who uses a Thesaurus just for fun. When I can afford it, I indulge my insatiable Wanderlust, traveling to places across the United States and Europe (Italians really do make some phenomenal pizza). I am also an avid philanthropist, and I have collected a great deal of free t-shirts to prove it. This summer I will be combining both of these hobbies, spending two weeks in Cape Town, South Africa, to mentor and teach underprivileged youth in the community. If anything about me is certain, it’s that I am an emotional person; I cry hard and I love harder. I truly believe that people are innately good, and that everyone deserves a second chance. My biggest hope for myself, and others, is to always find something to be inspired by and pursue it. As my mom annoyingly likes to say, “The world is your oyster.” Whatever that means. Rachel Knowles is a junior at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
